“The cottage smelt fusty when we first entered as if it had been shut up for months, so bought some air freshners to get rid of the smell.”

While the cottage itself was impressive with nice big rooms, it was let down by dated furniture and uncomfortable settees. The main bedroom needed a good clean!! The skirting boards were very dusty and the beams looked like they hadn't been dusted for years. When laid down in bed you could really see all the dust above our heads on the beams and it felt uncomfortable to look at. So all in all we don't think much of your cleaner at all!!! ...

It would have been a nice touch to have a welcome pack especially as we didn't arrive until around tea time and then had to go out again to find a shop. Not what we wanted to do as we were tired out after our long journey. Finally, the cottage has some great views but is a little hard to find and it seems to be nearer to Keswick rather than Windermere. If the owner resolved the issues raised then we would recommend the cottage for a peaceful stay in the Lake District.

About the location

UNDERBARROW

Kendal 5 miles; Windermere 7.5 miles.

Underbarrow is a quiet, pretty Lakeland village close to the historic market town of Kendal and within reach of the wonderful Lake Windermere. The village has a pub and is ideally placed for exploring southern Lakeland and the Lake District National Park. Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall, both with fine gardens, are nearby, and Kendal has much to offer in terms of shopping and is quite lively culturally, thanks to the Brewery Arts Centre and the Abbot Hall Art Gallery and Museum, which is widely recognised as one of the best in the region. Also worth a visit is the ruin of Kendal Castle, which was formerly the home of Katherine Parr, and there’s plenty to see and do with Grange-over-Sands, Cartmel, Ulverton, Bowness, Ambleside and even the Yorkshire Dales National Park within driving distance. Underbarrow is a lovely base for exploring the area.
