“Starting with positives: Nice South facing garden with the excitement of steam trains passing every half hour during the day!”

Rather too many issues with the house: The kitchen diner is on the North side of the house and is very dark with poor lighting. The fridge needs maintenance or replacement, very noisy motor. Insufficient lighting to read a book in any of the rooms but bedside lights in particular are too dim to read by. Poor signal on most of the TV stations. Eg not able to receive clearly most BBC stations. Bed linen was clean but had stains. The garden is mostly laid to lawn but the grass was very ...

Thank you for your feedback. See responses on each point: Lawn: Apologies-we will contact our gardener to rectify asap. This is supposed to be cut every two weeks. Linen: this is provided by a 3rd party professional changeover company, and we will give your feedback. This has never been mentioned by any previous guests and we generally receive positive from the cleanliness of the property. TV: There is a firestick option available on each tv which includes all apps for terrestrial tv as well as Prime and Netflix (own accounts required). This information is included in the information document sent to all guests. Lighting: There are main lights available in each room as well as lamps. We decided to keep a cosy environment with the lamps. Fridge: This is in the utility area which is separate to the kitchen and has a door. This has never been raised previously but again we will check if this has deteriorated recently. Kitchen direction: Sadly there’s not a huge amount we can do with this. The kitchen window faces out into the glass / coat area. You can still see out to the fields at the back of the house though and is a nice outlook. Thank you again for your feedback and the positive aspects highlighted. Property Owner

The property

Nestled against the charming backdrop of Newby Bridge is this historic terraced cottage.

It sits on the route of the historic Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway, whose steam trains trundle along the garden’s edge, within the outstanding Lake District National Park.

7 Railway Cottages offers a perfect, pet-friendly base for a family of four, welcoming children both young and older, or for couples wanting to get away from it all.

A generous boot room gives you space as you enter the property to kick off your muddy boots after a day on the fells, hang your coats and dump your bags.

The kitchen/diner is a great size, for hanging out in, over breakfast or playing boardgames or relaxing with the papers.

There’s a dining table for four which can be extended further for special family meals.

You’ll find everything you need in the contemporary and fully equipped kitchen for whipping up your favourite meals.

There’s a separate well kitted out utility room which means laundry and dirty dishes don’t have to clutter your kitchen/diner space.

The living room is a haven to return to at the end of the day, featuring plush seating, a woodburning stove, and a Smart TV, perfect for relaxing with loved ones.

The staircase leads you to a stunning master bedroom on the right, with a good size bathroom and a delightful bunk bedroom on the left.

The Farrow and Ball pallet that the rest of the house enjoys extends to the upstairs.

The well-presented double bedroom offers spectacular views over open countryside, a perfect sight to wake up to on your stay in the Lakes.

This is also the ideal spot to take pictures of the steam train as it chugs past the end of the enclosed garden.

Choose how you want to start your day in the family bathroom, either with a lazy morning bubble bath, or a quick refreshing shower.

Outside, there is a lovely, enclosed garden to the front, with a patio area, and uninterrupted views.

At the back there is ample parking.

One minute walk from the property is the award-winning Swan Hotel and Spa, which has great beer, a fantastic pub grub menu and a fine dining restaurant.

Not to mention a 5* Spa for when you fancy a little extra pampering.

Newly opened for 2023 is the West Windermere Way - a National Park walk that takes you from Newby Bridge to Lake Windermere.

There’s a great nature trail and playground out the back of the hotel that can keep kids amused for hours.

Day or night the Swan is such a short stroll away it gives you the option of food and drink on tap with no washing up, and no designated driver!

There is a really well stocked convenience store just moments away in Newby Bridge where you can get all your essentials and more (a Costa Express) or there’s a Booths a short drive away in Ulverston.

There’s fantastic walking in this part of the lakes, whether it’s a good fell walk you are after, or a long beach or promenade stroll.

Newby Bridge is within a short drive of Cartmel, Bowness on Windermere, Windermere, Ambleside, Kendal, Ulverston and Grange over Sands.

Coniston is also very accessible.

There are endless gourmet pubs dotted around the area and an abundance of places to eat and drink in any of the towns.

There are even two Michelin Star restaurants nearby.

Days out within easy reach include boat trips on Windermere, swinging through treetops at Go Ape in Grizedale Forest, trying your luck at horse riding at Bigland Hall, or discovering thrilling watersports activities on Coniston Water.

There's even plenty to do on a rainy day, from Cliffhanger Escape Rooms to the Lakeland Motor Museum, and the Lakes Aquarium.

Don't miss the chance to visit Fell Foot Park (National Trust), just paces from the house or slide on your walking boots and ramble up Gummers Howe, before treating yourself to Sunday Lunch at the renowned Mason’s Arms on Strawberry bank.

Whatever your taste in Lake District holidays, 7 Railway Cottages is the perfect base from which to enjoy it.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

NEWBY BRIDGE

Bowness-on-Windermere 8 miles.

The small village of Newby Bridge takes its name from the five arched stone bridge built in 1651 over the River Leven. The famous Furness Railway, one of Britain's oldest working standard gauge steam railways, runs between Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge. Visit the Lakeside Hotels and enjoy magnificent views across Windermere and the surrounding fells, or enjoy the Aquarium of the Lakes, where the naturally themed habitats, bring the history of the Lakes vividly to life. Bowness-on-Windermere provides a lovely day out, plus the picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, and admire the views at nearby Gummer's How.
