We have been travelling from Germany to Great Britain for our holidays for over 12 years now – always staying in high-quality accommodation – but nothing like this has ever happened to us before. 1. The Signs We arrived at the accommodation on a wet and cold afternoon. We immediately noticed the large number of prohibition and instruction signs posted both inside the house and in the garden. For us, it goes without saying that we always treat the furnishings and all objects with care and respect. The flood of signs dampened our holiday mood and did not make us feel welcome. The instructions continued in large red letters in the house rules. 2. The Heating Upon arrival, the temperature in the house was 18 degrees Celsius and all the radiators throughout the accommodation had been turned off. We turned up the main thermostat for a few hours to establish a reasonable basic temperature in the house.Over the next two days, it became apparent that the heating system was set to a temperature of 21 degrees via a timer programme. When you come back from a hike in wet weather in the evening, that is clearly not a comfortable temperature. Our concern was not to heat the entire building unnecessarily, but to reach a more comfortable room temperature in the living room, for example. We therefore manually set the thermostats higher for a short period. The owner clearly did not like this adjustment, as he remotely locked the main thermostat at 21 degrees for the rest of our stay. Although we understand the need to reduce energy costs, we find this behaviour unacceptable given a rental price of over £1,000 per week. As there was no tumble dryer available and the rotary clothes dryer outside could not be used due to the persistent rain, there was no option for drying wet outerwear and trousers. The radiators in the bathroom were switched off throughout the entire week, and there was no explanation for this in the house rules. For a week, we had damp, clammy towels and it was very cold in the bathrooms. 3. Dog-friendliness There was no way to shower the dog outside. We had to use a bucket and towels, which was extremely inconvenient with a large dog in bad weather. There was a water connection in the garden, but no hose. Due to the heating being turned off and the lack of a dryer, there was also no way to dry the wet dog towels. If a owner decides to allow dogs, they should also ensure that there are suitable facilities for cleaning the dog properly. In addition, we were informed on arrival in the house rules that our dog was not allowed in the carpeted areas. This included the living room. Had we known this in advance, we would never have booked the house. 4. The Garden The garden is extremely noisy due to the adjacent main road. This detail was also not mentioned in the property description. Summary: a very stylish house with numerous rules, which is why we would not consider booking it again. The owners of the house we booked afterwards showed us how it could be done better: they contacted us immediately after our arrival to ask if we were warm enough...

About the location

MILNTHORPE

Arnside 3 miles; Silverdale 6 miles; Kendal 7 miles.

Milnthorpe, once an important medieval market town, is located in the South Lakes between Kendal and Carnforth, just a few miles from the seaside village of Arnside. Reminders of the town's history can still be found today amongst the narrow lanes and historic buildings, which speak of a time when a coach and four was more common than a four-wheel drive. Set in lovely rolling countryside, the area has much to offer, with the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis offering a tropical hall and butterfly house. Dallam Tower and Levens Hall (historic and beautiful stately homes with their deer parks, topiary and ornamental gardens) provide a great day out for visitors. Leighton Hall, Sizergh Castle, the Great Lakes Aquarium, Windermere and Grizedale Forest are also all within easy reach and well worth a visit. From stunning limestone pavements and wonderful woodland walks to beaches and scenic coastal paths, there really is something for everyone.
