“Yew Tree Farm is noting short of magical.”

Absolutely quintessential English farm cottage retaining its historic charm and character in a breathtaking setting. Absolutely quintessential English farm cottage retaining its historic charm and character in a breathtaking setting. The fact that it is still situated on a working farm only adds to the experience. Jo and John, the farmers, were wonderfully hospitable, including a welcoming note and bottle of wine. The various farm dogs and cats, particularly Tom the black-and-white cat, took us in like family. Very convenient to the local village of Coniston, which has all the essentials we needed: an outstanding independent wine shop, Bottles & Brews; a co-op for all grocery needs; several excellent pubs; and a petrol station well stocked with firewood for the two open fires. Then also very easy drive to nearby Ambleside, Grasmere, and Windermere, and a beautiful trek farther afield to Keswick. Also convenient to several nearby fells (Holme for an easy warm-up and, of course, Old Man of Coniston). I must also recommend nearby Graythwaite Estate for archery and clay pigeon shooting. Our guide, Simon, was absolutely delightful and great with our children. Can’t recommend him enough. Already looking forward to a return visit.

The property

We are thrilled to offer the beautiful Grade 2 listed Yew Tree Farm to our holiday guests.

This truly iconic Lake District farmhouse nestles in the quiet Coniston valley and is one of the most well known and most pictured buildings in the National Park.

Once owned by Beatrix Potter, who left it to The National Trust, it was used as Miss Potter's home in the film 'Miss Potter' starring Rene Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, and has been visited by many celebrities over the years.

Emma Thompson stayed and even The Queen visited the farm on her last visit to the Lakes.

It has featured in various TV programmes and photo shoots.

This is very much a working farm rearing Herdwick sheep and Belted Galloways and you can even collect your own breakfast eggs from the farm chickens. The surrounding area abounds in wonderful scenery being less than a mile from both Tarn Hows and Yew Tree Tarn.

There are walks and rambles in abundance, bridle paths for cyclists and local fishing on Esthwaite Water and Coniston Water.

Lake Windermere, Grizedale Forest and surrounding high peaks are there to be explored. The original farmhouse dates back to early 17thC with later additions in the 1720's.

It really does ooze character with a wealth of period features and antique pieces including some of Beatrix Potter's own furniture. Accommodation : Entrance porch in to panelled hallway.

The panelled sitting room (TV) is to one side of the hall with the dining room opposite - imagine being able to dine off Beatrix Potter's own dining table in the room which was once BP's own tea shop!

Both rooms have open fires and feature oak floors.

To the rear of the cottage is a well equipped, newly fitted kitchen. The magnificent period oak staircase features 250 year old panelling and leads to the three charmingly comfortable bedrooms each with feature bespoke beds and fine period decor.

Here you will find a four poster double room with adjacent bathroom (double bath, basin and wc /heated floor), a twin room with feature panelling and en-suite (rain shower, basin and wc/ heated floor).

The master bedroom with its pitched ceiling and cruck beams has king-size four poster (en-suite rain shower, basin and wc/ heated floor ). Outside: Guests will enjoy the atmosphere of the working farm whilst Yew Tree Farm has its own enclosed garden as well as a further patio area to the side where you can barbecue and pamper yourself in your own private hot tub.

Shared laundry facilities available in out-house. Note: Goose down duvets/pillows.

Starter basket of logs included, additional logs available to purchase locally.

Wi-fi signal varies.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.
