    “On arrival with 2 dogs we quickly realised that although the property was enclosed it was not secure for a small dog due to the the gap at the hinge side of the gate and the gap between the bars.”

    I called the owner who could not come round but he suggested we built a barricade using logs and plant pots which we did. Not ideal but it solved a problem. The property was very clean and well laid out. However, I would dispute the claim that the kitchen contained everything I would need for a dinner party. The baking trays were particularly grimy so bring foil to line them. The biggest problem we had was the front door. It was a struggle to lock it from the inside when you could lean your ...

It was a struggle to lock it from the inside when you could lean your weight into the door but for me it was impossible to lock from the outside. Only my husband could manage that. Looking at past reviews this has been an ongoing problem so why it is not fixed by now is a disgrace. We could have used the patio doors and walked round but we had already built out dog barrier! Linen was provided (fitted sheets did not fit) as were towels though only one small bath towel per person and one hand towel between us all (we had to go out and buy more!). From the welcome info we were told bin bags were available under the sink - they were not. The smart TV wasn't smart, after we had plugged everything back in we could not get the Roku stick to work, so no film night for us as mentioned in the description. All the beds were very hard and we all agreed that we were not sleeping well. The pillows were very thin too. I also agree with past reviews about the mirrors and the toilet seat is still broken. While we were there I put the major issues in an e-mail to the address provided in the welcome pack, but not had a response. Good points: location, good capacity on fridge and freezer space. We would return to the area but definitely not this property.

Tucked away in Nenthead, Cumbria, near to the bustling town of Alston, is this contemporary end-terrace cottage, Tree Tops.

Sleeping up to six guests in a spacious property, Tree Tops is ideal for a family or group looking for a getaway in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the North Pennines.

Upon entering the cottage, you are immediately greeted by a bright and airy kitchen/diner, containing everything you need to host a dinner party for friends or family, including a lovely corner couch with a rustic wooden table, double electric oven and Smart TV for entertainment; start the woodburning stove and ease your feet on the underfloor heating after a long day of exploring.

With dinner done and dishes in the dishwasher, retire to the peaceful sitting room just next door for a film night.

Heading upstairs, Tree Tops has three double rooms with storage space for hiking gear or your best going out clothes, as well as a bathroom featuring a large walk-in shower and free-standing bath for a refreshing end to the day.

Back on the ground floor, the French doors in the sitting room lead to a quaint patio with Tree Top’s spectacular stone wall as a backdrop, whilst you enjoy your morning coffee on the picnic bench.

The cottage is just around the corner from a shop, where you can stock up on the essentials, whilst wandering around the quiet Nenthead, which also has the fascinating Nenthead Mines for guided trips underground, the village also hosts The Hive - a converted Weslian Chapel that now is a wonderful licensed cafe, art gallery and craft shop, serving amazing food, cakes and drinks.

For a more bustling village, Alston is a short journey away, with pubs, restaurants and cafes to enjoy, historic cobbled streets to explore and local specialities to try.

A little further south west lies Melmerby, a small village at the foot of the Pennine scar that boasts picturesque views, winding streams and sits at the edge of Eden Valley for spectacular walks.

Just beyond Melmerby, you will find Penrith, a busy town known for its impressive 14th century castle, Roman Museum houses to discover local history and plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing and canoeing, as well as cinemas, leisure and cultural centres.

Resting on the edge of The Lake District, you'll find ample opportunities for walking and watersports.

Nenthead is one of the highest villages in England and has a rich mining history. Many mines still remain which are open to the public and waiting to be discovered. The village was also the first to have electric street lighting due to the excess power created by the mining industry. This is a fantastic base for those looking to explore the area as the village has a pub, restaurant, shop/Post Office, children’s play area and a church set in an elevated position. There are a number of attractions available in the nearby area including taking a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally.
