    “The accommodation was splendid.”

    It is very clean and comfortable on the first-floor of a larger residence (don't worry, you can't hear the people on the ground floor). The living space is big and offers a nice dining area by the bay window where one can look out upon wildlife in the front drive and garden including birds, butterflies, and bunnies! We couldn't find any coasters and were worried about leaving stains on surfaces so we used one of the wood place mats instead. We chose the bedroom without the skylight and it was ...

    It is very clean and comfortable on the first-floor of a larger residence (don't worry, you can't hear the people on the ground floor). The living space is big and offers a nice dining area by the bay window where one can look out upon wildlife in the front drive and garden including birds, butterflies, and bunnies! We couldn't find any coasters and were worried about leaving stains on surfaces so we used one of the wood place mats instead. We chose the bedroom without the skylight and it was very comfortable with lots of wardrobe space. The kitchen is small but contains everything you need and can fit two people doing different tasks. The owners also left us a lovely welcome pack of cake, cookies, hot beverage sachets, together with a pint of milk in the fridge. The bath-shower is excellent and helped relax after a long day's walking, and the heated towel rail helped heat the room as the cooler September weather kicked in in the evenings and early mornings; it did feel a bit cold to begin with, in the living space and bedroom, but the heating can be turned on via a timer or immediate 1-hour setting and the ample radiators helped provide enough warmth. The cosy sofa was also great for warming up when reading or watching a film in the evening. The only other thing we felt was missing was a hairdryer, but this is a minor quibble. The location is just outside Kendal, literally a few minutes from a Morrisons and Sainsbury's (get your petrol from here before you go exploring further afield). We found we could get to some good walking around Windermere, Coniston, Ambleside, and Grassmere within 30 to 45 minutes, and the scenic drives added to the relaxing nature of our stay. Overall, a tiptop place to stay. Thanks very much to the owners.

A historic market town with a fine reputation for shopping, Kendal nestles on the banks of the River Kent and is known as the Southern Gateway to the Lakes. Its old cobbled lanes and byways branch off the attractive main street, and the stone ruins of 12th century Kendal Castle sit perched on a hill with views over the town.
