“Lovely House, great views, brilliant access to superb walks from the door, nice local pub a stroll down the hill from he house.”

Cosy main sitting room, with open fire, lovely kitchen, though the white marble is a little intimidating as it will take stains if you're not careful! Unfortunately one of the rooms wasn't made up, we had asked for all rooms to be ready, we did email Sykes and ask for this to be done on the Monday, this did not happen. The waste bin was full and there was dust under the bedside cabinets. The small log burner in the second sitting room is in dire need of servicing or replacement as the seals are all gone and it smoked very badly. The heating once on manual worked very well, so the fires weren't really needed, more logs and kindling would have been nice though. The gift of prosecco was much appreciated and went very well as a bucks fizz to start the day. Great House, lovely setting, just some minor TLC required!

Thank you for this feedback which we appreciate. This is the first time that the snug log burner has smoked and we will look into this immediately. We are puzzled about the report of an unmade up bed as our housekeeper told us that all the beds were made up on the Friday before you arrived as they always are before guests. We have a policy never to leave any unmade beds even if only two people are renting the house-to leave the full choice to our guests. The housekeeping Manager went in himself the next day, Saturday as soon as we received your report from Sykes. He checked that all the rooms had been made up and he emptied all the bins again leaving them fresh for you. As far as the white marble is concerned, this is our family house and we have furnished and refurbished it to the highest standards and we hope that our guests will appreciate and enjoy it as much as we do. We are glad that you do seem to have had a nice holiday and enjoyed the remarkable walking and mountain air. Property Owner

The property

A detached property, set amidst 8 acres of woodland and gardens, backed by the Coniston Ranges in the hamlet of Torver, is High Torver House.

This large, whitewashed property is perched on the fell slopes and provides commanding views across the valley, sleeping eight guests, making it ideal for a large family or group looking to enjoy a tranquil Lake District escape.

Heading through the back door, you will be met with a handy cloakroom, where you can leave muddy coats and boots after a day of exploring, before entering the well-equipped kitchen, complete with a host of mod-cons, including an oven and dishwasher, with more handy amenities, such as a freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer, found in the utility room.

The snug is a cosy space for relaxing together in front of the woodburning stove, or simply admiring your surrundings from the patio door, which opens up onto a terrace with outdoor furniture.

From the snug, a staircase takes you up to a king-size double bedroom with an en-suite shower room, making this part of the house a standalone annexe if needed.

Coming back down the stairs, follow the period Minton-tiled hallway towards the dining room, which comfortably seats eight, an ideal space to enjoy home-cooked meals together, and the main sitting room has ample seating for everyone, along with a woodburning stove, TV and a bookcase filled with books you can curl up with and enjoy.

Heading up the main staircase, you can relax on the pretty window seat, admiring the wonderful surrounding views on offer, while the remaining three bedrooms can be found on the first floor; two king-size doubles and a super-king-size with zip/link feature, all of which have been tastefully decorated, with exposed wooden floors and ample storage for your belongings.

The incredible family bathroom has a stunning stained glass window, above the free-standing bath, along with a large separate walk-in shower, so you can choose how to prepare for each day.

Outside, there is an adjacent barn with bike storage and an enclosed area for pets, plus parking for three cars, an enclosed lawn garden with a monkey-puzzle tree and an extensive patio, spanning the length of the house, with outdoor furniture, ideal for admiring the valley views in front of you while enjoying an alfresco lunch.

The peaceful hamlet of Torver is an undiscovered gem, with two wonderful pubs serving food, as well Crake and Woodland valleys, Torver Common and Beacon Tarn, all well worth exploring.

This area of the Lake District is very popular with walkers and cyclists of all abilities wanting to escape the central Lakes crowds.

Coniston Water is a pleasant 5-minute drive away, ideal for fell walking, along with the iconic climb up to the top of The Old Man of Coniston.
