“A lovely, comfortable cottage in an excellent location.”

The fixtures and fittings were first class. The communications before and during the stay from Alun, the owner, were the best we’ve experienced. The only issue is the parking: I damaged our clutch trying to reverse up the driveway (as was recommended). It would have been better to go up forwards or to have the lower space, which Alun agreed that we could use for the week, to be the designated space.

With the valley-side location and stunning views does come the steep driveway up to the barn. “Lovely cottage in a beautiful and very quiet location.”

Cottage was spotless and very well equipped. Plenty of walks right from the front door and the local pubs and tea shop were very welcoming. Yes, the drive is a challenge but either let Alun park it for you or just use the 2nd space at the bottom of the drive. I would note that due to the more open plan aspect upstairs, the bedroom is partially open, but is still private and only means you can't have the telly on if 1 of you is in bed. Alun was the perfect host, very friendly and approachable.

“Had a lovely week at Townfoot Barn.”

Modern property with everything you could possibly need, inc. washing facilities, iron and ironing board, kitchen utensils. The stairgate at the bottom of the stairs definitely came in handy with the dogs. Used the bbq (just buy charcoal bags from Booths not too expensive). Welcome pack was a nice touch. Parking was no issue as long as you follow the owners instructions. Owners were on hand if needed but also respected our privacy. We were even allowed to check in a couple of hours early which was really helpful after a 7 hour journey. Only minor issue for us was that to toilet the dogs you need to use the bridleway/footpath. Didn't see many people but the smells and distractions made toileting them difficult at times, (especially when we had a bit of rain), but it wouldn't put us off returning. All in all a lovely property and would highly recommend.

“The property is amazing and in a fabulous location in the beautiful Troutbeck valley.”

We would, however, like to mention the vehicular access which some drivers of front wheel drive cars may find challenging. Reversing up a steep incline on a bend! Four-wheel drive vehicles will not have a problem. We feel this should be mentioned on the Lakelovers website property information page. This level of detail was only revealed after we had paid for our holiday. For many people this won’t be an issue but for us it was an important factor in selecting the property.

Regards the parking - we do provide a very convenient, private space, directly outside the Barn, but the valley-side setting of the Barn, with its accompanying great views does mean that the driveway is on an incline. Our arrival information does clearly state that if you have any concern with the driveway access, you should let me know as we have an alternative parking space, readily available. When I contacted you to check that everything was OK during your stay, you didn't mention this, but if you had, we could have solved your concern. I hope that clarifies matters for anyone reading. “Superb place to stay.”

Lovely host and was very helpful. Lovely supplies and biscuits left. Views brilliant. House was really lovely. It was great to have 2 different areas to sit either end of the house in the garden and sit and have dinner outside or watch the sunrise. We also had 4 public footpaths within 100 yards of the house to go up or down the fells and a lovely path behind the house to take the dog for an early walk in the morning. Had choices of breakfast cereal provided, coffee, tea and jams and bread all free. Kitchen and decorations were pretty much all brand new. Loved the roof windows and a great tv. Lovely building and decorated to a really high standard and we had a fantastic time.

TROUTBECK

Windermere 3 miles; Ambleside 4 miles.

The small Lakeland village of Troutbeck can be found between its more famous neighbours Windermere and Ambleside, close by the Kirkstone Pass. A mixture of houses, cottages and farms, the village is scattered along a narrow lane bordered by a drystone wall. Many of these buildings date back to the 17th Century with features such as mullioned windows and heavy cylindrical chimneys and the northern end boasts its own 17th century inn. Close by, the bustling towns of Windermere and Ambleside are popular with visitors, providing a range of amenities to suit all tastes. Lake Windermere offers boat trips, including the lakeside ferry to the Lakeside Aquarium and Grizedale Forest Park.
