    “The cottage is now feeling a little tired, a lot of maintenance is required to bring it back to the normal standard we have become used to when booking with Sykes.”

    We travelled for 6 hours to our destination was disappointing to find that there was not even so much as a pint of milk on our arrival! We had to search for towels and the guest information booklet, which was vastly out of date. Many items were unusable or in need of some attention the oven, dishwasher, kitchen hot tap, reclining chair, toilet seat to name a few. The property is up for sale so whether these issues will be addressed remains to be seen but we would not return.

The property

Situated to the north of Skiddaw in the pretty village of Ireby this 2 bedroomed cottage which sleeps four people is ideally located to explore the northern lakes.

Free use of two mountain bikes and a set of golf clubs.

Situated just to the north of Skiddaw, Ireby is an excellent centre for touring and walking throughout the northern Lakes yet is relatively unspoilt and provides a haven from the hustle and bustle of the busier parts of the Lake District.

Ambleside and Windermere are however within easy reach.

There are numerous walking opportunities from the door over the Caldbeck Fells and Skiddaw which leads you into Keswick (12 miles by road) where many amenities including Derwent Water, restaurants, pubs and shops await you.

After a busy day on the fells or sight seeing a relaxed evening can be enjoyed sat around the stove in this cosy cottage or in the local pub, just next door, which serves a variety of beers and good home cooked food.

Ale Cottage has retained much of its original character with exposed beams and latched doors throughout and is heated by night storage heaters.

Bassenthwaite 5 miles; Keswick 12 miles.

Ireby nestles in the peaceful fells of the northern Lake District, in the beautiful area to the north of Keswick known as 'Back of Skiddaw'. Once a thriving market town, with the market cross believed to date back to 1200, Ireby is now a truly unspoilt, peaceful fell village. The peaks of Great Calva and Knott look down on the village and the nearby Aughertree Fell was the site of a Bronze Age farm and the remains of a pre-Roman road are still in evidence, a unique and most complete settlement from the Iron Age period. Nearby Bassenthwaite Lake itself, while boasting gentler scenery than others in the region, is still one of the most picturesque places in England. Places of interest nearby include Mirehouse, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the Lake with small open-air theatre (reputedly frequented by poets such as Tennyson and Wordsworth), Trotters Farm, and Dodd Wood. Most of the attractions of the Lake District are within easy reach and the quieter Northern Fells are almost on the doorstep. The nearby towns of Cockermouth and Keswick, both have weekly markets and offer a good range of amenities. The scenery of the Yorkshire Dales is within touring distance, as is the city of Carlisle and Hadrians Wall.
