The property

Herdwick Croft is a charming retreat set in the village of Bassenthwaite in Cumbria, offering families and friends a welcoming base within the Lake District National Park, complete with countryside views, woodburning stoves and convenient access to excellent nearby leisure facilities.

Arriving through the gated entrance, you park beside the hedges that frame the garden, where a graceful fountain statue sits among the greenery and open fields stretch into the distance, setting a peaceful tone from the moment you step out of the car.

Inside, the tiled kitchen encourages you to settle in by warming the range cooker and preparing something comforting after a day of exploring, its practical layout making it easy to move between ingredients and surfaces.

From here, you head into the spacious dining room, where tall windows illuminate the wooden flooring and the woodburning stove adds a gentle glow as everyone gathers to enjoy relaxed meals and unhurried conversation.

When you are ready to unwind, the sitting room features leather sofas and a bay window that fills the space with natural light and character, the garden view offering a soothing backdrop as you settle into the evening.

Every room throughout the property includes a TV, allowing slow starts to the morning or quiet moments whenever needed.

The games room introduces a livelier note, with a bay window brightening the space and another woodburning stove adding warmth while you enjoy a game of darts or pool in a welcoming, social atmosphere.

As night falls, make your way upstairs to refresh in the family bathroom before retreating to the bedrooms along the landing.

One double room provides a TV and views across the garden towards the far end of Bassenthwaite, with glimpses of mountains and lake in the distance and an en suite walk in shower.

The twin room offers its own TV and a bay window framing countryside and river scenery.

The four poster double bedroom creates a serene vantage point with a TV and a chair positioned to admire the mountain and lake backdrop, complemented by an en suite bath perfect for a long, relaxing soak.

Stepping outside the next morning reveals the stillness of the garden once more, the fountain statue and field views offering a calm start to the day.

A short walk leads to a nearby hotel and spa where guest passes grant access to facilities including an infinity edge pool, outdoor hot tub, hydrotherapy pool, aroma room, steam room, sauna, rain dance shower, gym and treatment rooms, arranged through the owners.

With so much to explore, you may head to Whinlatter Forest, where woodland trails weave between tall pines and sunlight filters through the canopy, or spend time in Keswick browsing independent shops, galleries and enjoying lakeside strolls beside Derwentwater.

Further west, Cockermouth invites you to wander along its Georgian streets, discover artisan food shops and enjoy its heritage-rich atmosphere.

With scenic walking routes, cultural experiences and welcoming towns all within easy reach, Herdwick Croft provides an appealing base for discovering the northern Lakes.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £300.

About the location

BASSENTHWAITE

Keswick 8 miles; Cockermouth 9 miles.

An attractive village in the Northern Lakes, Bassenthwaite lies just a short distance to the north east of Bassenthwaite Lake, and retains its traditional rural feel, with a stream flowing gently on the outskirts, whitewashed Lakeland cottages, a pleasant vllage green and a real ale inn full of character! Bassenthwaite Lake itself, while boasting gentler scenery than others in the region, is still one of the most picturesque places in England. Places of interest nearby include Mirehouse, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the Lake with small open-air theatre (reputedly frequented by poets such as Tennyson and Wordsworth), Lake District Wildlife Park, and Dodd Wood. Most of the attractions of the Lake District are within easy reach and the quieter Northern Fells are almost on the doorstep. The nearby towns of Cockermouth and Keswick, both have weekly markets and offer a good range of amenities. The scenery of the Yorkshire Dales is within touring distance, as is the city of Carlisle and Hadrians Wall country.

Note: There are complimentary Armathwaite Hall Spa passes provided by the owner, adult use only due to the nature of the spa facilities (Must be pre-booked through the owners and subject to availability). Note: Please bring your own towels, only hand towels are provided
