Ambleside is full of history. The tiny 'Bridge House' is one of the most photographed buildings in the area; teetering on a bridge in the middle of the village. Ambleside also has a Roman fort, Galava. One of William Wordsworth's former family homes can be visited nearby at Rydal Mount & Gardens. His Grasmere home, Dove Cottage, is also open to the public and only a short drive away on the A591.
