Ambleside is a stunning traditional Lakeland village, on the northern shores of Lake Windermere and surrounded by dramatic Lake District mountains.
A popular base for walking in the Lake District, Ambleside also offers cosmopolitan shopping and eating. The pretty streets are packed with tempting cafes, acclaimed Lake District restaurants and local pubs serving real Lakeland ale. Lose yourself in the shops for an hour or two, visit the much photographed 'Bridge House' or explore the Roman fort Galava.
Stroll a few minutes out of the village centre and you'll reach Waterhead, where a handful of pub restaurants overlook Lake Windermere. Windermere Lake Cruises depart here at Waterhead Pier, providing scenic journeys to Bowness and Lakeside. Evening cruises are also available.
Exploring the wider Lake District is a breeze with Ambleside as your starting point. Historic Grasmere, the scenic Langdale Valley, Hawkshead and Coniston are all within easy driving distance, and also accessible by bus.
