Ambleside’s History

Ambleside’s history can be traced back as far as the Roman invasion and beyond. Indeed, the remains of an axe factory, high up in the Langdale Pikes, dates back to 4000BC. It isn’t until circa 90AD, however, that we see evidence of human habitat – a Roman fort at the head of Lake Windermere.

After the Romans, came the Vikings and after a bloody battle in Grasmere, where they and the Scots defeated King Dunmail, Cumbria was given to Scotland and over the next 900 years Ambleside developed industrially.

It was Henty VIII who, in the 1500’s dissolved the monasteries and this led to the land being broken up into farms. By the 17th century Ambleside folk had started to trade in materials like paper and cloth and as the industrial revolution started to quicken a canal joining the Lakes with Lancashire was built.

This marked the start of the Lake District and Ambleside as we now know it. Wealthy industrialists started to build country houses around Lake Windermere as a way of escaping the smog of northern cities and thus tourism began – these where the first of Ambleside’s luxury cottages and manor houses.
