Beatrix Potter's former home, Hill Top, is open to the public in the village of Near Sawrey, nestled between Hawkshead and Lake Windermere.
Hawkshead is an excellent base for walking in the Lake District, with easy and challenging routes in every direction. A manageable walk around Tarn Hows provides quite unforgettable scenery, whereas the more energetic will be tempted by Latterbarrow, Claife Heights, or perhaps the Langdale Pikes which are also within driving distance in the Langdale Valley. Grizedale Forest, with it's sculpture trails and cycling tracks, is popular with locals and visitors of all ages.
