Often referred to as Great Langdale, to distinguish it from nearby Little Langdale. This area is a popular Lake District holiday destination. Hikers, climbers, fell runners and lovers of the outdoors all love Langdale. Lakelovers have hand-picked a range of superb cottages.

Langdale is best known for the Langdale Pikes, a group of mountains on the northern side of the village. It is home to England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. It is also famous for it’s spectacular views. This includes Dungeon Ghyll Force Waterfall, Harrison Stickle and Pike of Stickle.

Langdale out and about

Our Langdale holiday cottages provide the ideal base camp to explore the area. Great Langdale is a u-shaped valley formed by glaciers. It encompasses the two villages of Chapel Stile and Elterwater, as well as the hamlet of High Close.

By comparison, Little Langdale is what’s known as a hanging valley. There are two quarries in Langdale, including Elterwater Quarry, the larger of the two. The other is Spout Cragg Quarry; both produce local rock, greenstone.

Walkers will love this area due to the range of fantastic routes available. The Langdale Pikes include: Pike of Stickle, Loft Crag, Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark. Also available to climb are Bowfell, Crinkle Crags and Pike O’Blisco fells.

Rock climbers will love Raven Crag, Gimmer Crag and White Ghyll. Prefer something a little more relaxing? The Langdale Spa offers a selection of leisure activities. This includes a swimming pool, steam room, solarium, sauna, gym and treatments. Our properties feature a mixture of styles and features. They are designed to suit a range of getaway needs and budgets. There is contemporary luxury with modern furniture. Traditional country charm with exposed beams and slate floors. Or WiFi, monsoon showers and all mod cons.

A self-catering holiday couldn’t be easier. If you don’t feel like cooking, then fear not. The Wainwrights Inn, Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and The Sticklebarn Tavern are all close by. They provide fabulous food and a welcoming atmosphere.

There are plenty of food shops nearby. There you can select from the finest locally sourced food the Lake District has.

There is a lot to do nearby, such as the Wordsworth Museum and Dove Cottage in Grasmere. There is a fantastic climbing wall in nearby Ambleside. Or try Windermere Lake Cruises for a different view of the stunning scenery!
