A self-catering lodge in Windermere really lets you soak up the Lakeland atmosphere. Easily accessible from the M6, and by train, Windermere is a well-served and modern village with a traditional feel. It's right next to the famously scenic A591, the main route into the heart of the Lakes, and only a couple of miles up the road from Bowness Bay and the shores of Lake Windermere. A great base for exploring, with plenty on your doorstep too. Set alongside a Lake District working hillside farm. High Borrans Farm is a 1000 acre hill farm, with a flock of some 1200 Swaledale ewes and around 25 beef suckler cows. The land rises to about 1300 feet on heather-clad fell tops and this farm is a wonderful environment for nature lovers as well as adventure lovers as mountain bike routes run through the farm yard itself.
A short walk from High Borrans Lodge is Orrest Head where the views over Lake Windermere are simply breathtaking.
In Windermere village there is a high-class Booths supermarket, selling the finest Lakeland produce and day-to-day essentials. The headquarters of Lakeland Ltd is well worth a visit for culinary fans, and the high street is lined with a range of local shops. There are a number of good traditional pubs, serving real Lakeland ale and hearty pub meals. You'll find lazy cafes for breakfast out, and excellent Lake District restaurants.
A good 25 minute walk away is the award winning 'The Watermill, inn at Ings, serving over 16 real ales and great pub food, well worth a visit.
Just a walk or short taxi ride away is Bowness village, where more attractions await on the shores of Lake Windermere. Scenic cruises aboard the famous steamers run from Bowness Pier, ferrying passengers the full length of the lake with stops at Ambleside and Lakeside. Windermere Golf Club is found just outside Bowness village - fantastic views!
Bustling Bowness also has plenty of nightlife to offer. Try contemporary tapas at Bodegas & Sol, or stylish dining at The Postillion Restaurant. The Hole int Wall is a favourite traditional Lakeland pub, and there are plenty of other bars, pubs and even a nightclub if you want to really make a night of it.
