The surrounding landscape that lies between Lake Windermere and Coniston Lake in the South Lakes is some of the prettiest in the region. This is where you will find the chocolate-box village of Hawkshead, the rural hamlet of Sawrey and resort of Lakeside.

From the bustle of Ambleside in the heart of the Lake District, head south on the B5286 along the quiet western side of Lake Windermere. Before long you will come to the small and enchanting village of Hawkshead. Hawkshead has several good pubs, but remains a relatively sleepy village – the perfect place to get away from it all. In contrast, however, the surrounding area is home to some of the most vibrant of Lake District destinations, with Coniston, Ambleside and Windermere all within very easy access giving you the best of both worlds.

Continue south past Esthwaite Water and you will discover Near Sawrey and the neighbouring village of Far Sawrey. Famous for being the home of Beatrix Potter, Near Sawrey attracts visitors from all over the world keen to see Hill Top, the 17th century farmhouse where the author lived and completed many of her famous Peter Rabbit tales. Hill Top is now a National Trust museum and is one of the most visited attractions in the Lake District.

On the very southern tip of Lake Windermere is Lakeside. Here the scenery changes once more. Lakeside is a bustling destination with lots of things to see and do; take to the water on a guided tour of of the lake with Windermere Cruises (a great way to see the surrounding landscape), refuel in one of the many bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs or find a walk with a great view of England’s jewel, Lake Windermere.
