Dog friendly self-catering accommodation in Bowness
The attraction that often draws holidaymakers to Bowness is the lake itself. Windermere is the UK’s largest natural lake, stretching along 10.5 miles of stunning scenery. And it is also home to some of the most accessible walks and public rights of way in the region. Dogs can run, under close control of course, off the lead.
The area also has lots of ‘Miles without Stiles’ walks. They are easy-access walks, perfect for wheelchairs, prams and less active pets.
Dog Friendly Walks in Bowness
Bowness to Cockshott Point is a superb circular local Bowness walk and is only 2km. This makes it the perfect post dinner stroll. Catch the sunset over the lakes. Or an early morning breath of fresh air before the daytrippers arrive. Start on Glebe Road and follow the walk to the National Trust owned Cockshott Point.
A great ‘Miles without Stiles’ walk is from the lakeshore path alongside the western shore. This is particularly suitable for less mobile people or families with pushchairs. A 5km walk from Red Nab to Wray Castle is perfect. It has lots of nature’s finest dog ‘toys’ to be found in the superb oak, ash and silver birch woods. There is lake access for cooling off, making High Wray Bay particularly good for pups.
Windermere Lake Cruises
A holiday in one of our pet friendly cottages in Bowness should also involve a trip on Windermere’s tranquil waters which dogs will love too.
Windermere Lake Cruises have an all-year-round dog friendly policy. Well behaved dogs travel for free. There are even onboard doggy bowls and many of the piers have doggy refreshments areas too.
Try a cruise for sightseeing purposes or to get to another part of the south lakes. It’s ideal for all the family and all weather conditions. Plus you avoid the hassle of parking and road congestion.
Tip from us: get a ‘combined’ ticket, including local attraction and cruise ticket as a great money saver.
Places to Visit
We’d recommend catching a cruise to visit Windermere’s western shore. There you’ll find the National Trust owned Wray Castle. Brockhole National Park Visitor Centre is on the opposite side. Halfway between Bowness and Ambleside, is also a great place to head to for a dog friendly day out. Both are excellent places to visit with all the family, especially little pooch.
Or, if you fancy taking to the waters under your own ‘steam’, over the spring and summer months we’d recommend hiring a traditional row boat. Pets on leads are welcome to enjoy the ride, a picnic and the spectacular scenery!
Pets are not allowed in two of the popular local attractions, Lake Aquarium or The World of Beatrix Potter attraction. Do remember to make other arrangements if you go. Leaving pets in cars is not recommended, especially in hot weather.
All the family will love a trip to Lakeland Motor Museum, Newby Bridge. Well behaved dogs and their owners are allowed everywhere except for the café. Don’t forget to pick up a children’s quiz from reception.
Dog Friendly Restaurants and Pubs
Dogs are a mainstay of the Lake District and so many cafes, restaurants and pubs in Bowness welcome furry paws.
Some particularly good ones to head to include the handy Ship Inn on Glebe Road and walkers pub The Royal Oak on Kendal Road.
A 15 minute bus ride away, you will love traditional Lakeland pub, The Watermill Inn and Brewery. Based in the village of Ings, local dogs will often get served before their owners! Dogs will find delicious Lakeland water and dog biscuits on tap, as well as great walks from the pub.
If you’ve hired a dog sitter then some retail therapy in Bowness is a real treat. Popular names like Edinburgh Woolen Mill, Fat Face, Joules, Costa Coffee, Laura Ashley, Peter Rabbit & Friends, Pandora Jewelry and Hawkshead alongside local boutiques, trendy cafes and a range of cuisines, including Thai, Italian, bar and grills.
If you fancy a romantic night out into the early hours, or trying something that your less adventurous furry other-half isn’t up to, there are plenty of great dog sitters across the Lake District. Only 15 minutes from Bowness you’ll find Dog Tale, based in Newby Bridge. They offer dog sitting for the day, overnight stays, dog food delivery and full grooming if you fancy a ‘spa’ treatment for your four-legged family member.
Have a look at our Windermere dog friendly cottages, only a mile from the bustle of Bowness bay. Windermere is where you’ll find the nearest train station as well as some very well-stocked shops like Booths, the Co-op, Lakeland kitchenware, Windermere wine stores as well as fabulous upmarket bistros and bars. Lakeland Pet Supplies is on the main road running through Windermere if you fancy picking up some holiday treats or specialist pet food for your loved one, or even if you forgot to pack their bed or blanket!

How to Keep Everyone Happy
Just remember to ‘paws for thought’; take your dog out and about with you and don’t leave him in your holiday home. Be responsible for dog mess and be mindful of local wildlife and livestock. Be aware that you need to keep your dog on a short lead around livestock. Especially during breeding season, March to July.
